Area Information

The first record of the site of Columbus in Western history is found in the annals of the explorer Hernando de Soto, who is reputed to have crossed the Tombigbee nearby on his search for El Dorado.

The town that would come to be known as Columbus was officially founded in 1821. Before its incorporation, the town site was referred to as Possum Town, which remains its nickname even today.

During the American Civil War, Columbus was a hospital town. As a result, it largely avoided Union attack. Many of the casualties from the Battle of Shiloh were brought here. The decision of a group of ladies to decorate the Union and Confederate graves with flowers together on May 29, 1866, is credited as part of the founding of Memorial Day.

Featuring some of the South's grandest architecture, Columbus & Lowndes County offer an impressive variety of housing options - historic mansions, downtown apartments, luxury golf course homes, riverfront & lakeside estates, quaint farms, new developments and more.

15 public schools and 4 private schools provide educational options to area students. Higher education is offered through Mississippi State University from just 27 miles away. Other institutions available within 70 miles or less include Itawamba Community College, the University of Alabama and Shelton State Community College.

Baptist Memorial Hospital/ Golden Triangle Inc. serves local health care needs.

Located on the Tenn-Tom Waterway, our area is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise with outstanding opportunities for camping, boating, fishing, hunting and even picnicking. The 44,000 acres of surface water on the Tenn-Tom are comprised of 10 lock and dams creating a total of 10 large lakes.

The largest of these is Columbus Lake, which covers almost 9,000 acres and is more than 22 miles long.

For the golfer, there are 6 courses within 30 minutes of Columbus, including Old Waverly - voted one of the top 100 courses in the nation.
Average high temperatures reach 93 degrees in July, and average lows drop to 32 degrees in January. Monthly precipitation averages 4.8 inches with approximately 2.1 inches of annual snowfall.

One result of Columbus's history as a hospital town during the Civil War was the sparing of its antebellum homes, making its collection second only to Natchez as the most extensive in Mississippi. These historic homes can be toured by visitors for a small admission fee.
